Cigna Reimbursement Policy - Modifier 25/Injections
|
|
COS Opposes Cigna Policy
COS President, Michael Aronow, MD, recently communicated the Orthopaedic Society's opposition to
Cigna’s reimbursement policy number R30,
that will deny Evaluation and Management Codes appended with Modifier 25, when billed with injection codes on the same date of service with a same or similar diagnosis code, effective March 16, 2020.
The policy also appears to contradict CIGNA’s First Quarter 2020 Clinical, Reimbursement, and Administrative Policy Updates which states that after review of the appropriate use of billing for E & M services when billed with codes for a joint injection or aspiration reimbursement for the E & M codes “may” be denied.
The COS has asked for clarification and requested a meeting with Cigna representatives to rescind or make significant changes to this policy to ensure patient access to efficient and effective treatment and care and to properly reimburse a physician for the care and treatment the provide.

CT Legislature 2020
Since the beginning of the 2020 session, the COS and its lobbyists are advocating for meaningful legislative change for the orthopaedic community and their patients.
Current advocacy efforts include:
- Requiring Health Insurers collect the Deductible for the policies they sell;
- Prohibiting non compete clauses in physician contracts;
- Stopping any drug formulary changes mid policy; and
- Preserving the OON Suprise Billing Statute
Throughout the session, we will be reaching out to the membership with grassroots alerts and requests for patient outreach. Please answer the call to action and add your voice to debate.
We need the collective voice of Connecticut's orthopaedic community to help deliver strong messages to the Legislature and make a difference in the debate and discussion of key bills proposed this year.
