Highest Honor- Orthopaedist of the Year Recipient Brian Smith, MD

Brian Smith, MD, received the Connecticut Orthopaedic Society’s 2017 Orthopaedist (COS) of the Year award. The award was presented by COS Immediate Past President, F. Scott Gray, MD during the Annual Meeting held on May 12, 2017 in Farmington, CT. He joins 22 outstanding Connecticut Orthopaedists who have received the highest honor since the award’s inception in 1995.

Dr. Smith was selected by his peers for his leadership and commitment to the Society, his dedication to the integrity of the practice of medicine, his exemplary role as resident educator and his tireless and compassionate care of young children and their families.

Dr. Smith’s service to his orthopaedic colleagues and Society spans more than a decade and includes serving as the Society’s Vice President from 2007-2009 and as President from 2009 – 2011. His thoughtful insights, keen interest in the state of healthcare reform and advocacy for physician collegiality, helped guide the Society members through the turbulent beginnings of the Accountable Care Act, communicated the importance of “on call” protocol and spearheaded a defensive medicine survey study by the Society.

He is a leader involved in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Board of Directors; serving as Past Chair of the AAOS BOS and currently as Chair of the AAOS BOS Nominating Committee. Dr. Smith is an active and committed member of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, American Academy of Pediatrics, Orthopaedic Section and the Scoliosis Research Society.

As Resident Director and longtime educator, Dr. Smith has been actively involved in training residents first at UConn and Connecticut Children’s Hospital and in more recent years at Yale, where he is a Professor of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. In recognition of his superb teaching and training ability, he was awarded the Wayne O. Southwick Resident Teaching Award twice from the Yale Orthopaedic Residency Program.

In his presentation, Dr. Gray noted that not only is Dr. Smith a leader and contributor to organized medicine and resident education, he is a caring and compassionate surgeon who cares for children facing orthopaedic difficulties and challenges and their families.

He received his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine, where he completed his orthopaedic residency at the University’s Medical Center. He went onto a Fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedics at Boston Children’s Hospital and; served as Staff Orthopaedic Surgeon at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Dr. Smith and his wife reside in Avon, CT.
